The “Center”

“Pulled Bridge” Community Distance Learning Center proposes an advanced educational prototype in the rural community which has a general uptrend in the furtherance of education with various focuses while pedagogical shifts in learning have happened globally. Discovery Learning (1970s) set up the active-learning philosophy, and Constructive Learning (1980s) valued the social interaction in education processes, which followed by Socio-Constructivist Learning (1990s) as the next step in the learning-centered evolution. At the same time, the advances in technology has been reforming the learning and teaching processes, especially with the rapidly developed portable devices. Mobile / Distance Learning has been embodying the learner-centered pedagogy by removing the limits of accessing physical resources in the past ten years.

Located in Henglu Town by the Tuolin Lake and the provincial highway 304, this community center aims to provide a transitional education facility that expands the social interaction from within the adjacent areas to a broader network, and facilitate residents proper tutoring towards a self-activate learner. Spaces equipped with media devices allow individual or group learning activities, including media classroom, M-Learning kiosk, all-in-one module that has living and studying spaces with books and digital devices, as well as outreach components that travel on boats between multiple villages around the lake.

The “Bridge”

As one gets off the Zhulin No.2 Bridge, he / she will detour through a false bridge peeled off from the original one. The landscaped platform -with enclosed spaces attached below- stretches itself from the green terrain, and is elevated up from the shore of the lake by an array of lightweight structural members. The position of structural elements shifts three dimensionally, transforms the arch of the existing bridge structure while following its rhythm touching the foundation. While the water surface acting as a dynamic reflective medium, the pulled bridge generates perceptual illusions with its reflection as one moving towards, or around it.
